What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is the condition where body produces to fail insulin or fails to use the insulin already produced by pancreas. The diabetes is primarily classified into 3 main types. Other types of diabetes also occur. The main types are
  1. Type l diabetes
  2. Type 2 diabetes
  3. Gestational diabetes

The above are the most common types and pre diabetes is also another form of diabetes

    This type of diabetes occur when there is no insulin produced as the pancreas which produce insulin gets attack. Insulin is a prominent hormone in the body which makes glucose levels to flow from blood to body cells. Glucose forms from the food we eat. The antibodies attack pancreas which are insulin produced glands, thus diabetes I occurs.


    There are no specific reasons behind this type of diabetes to occur. The immune system attacks cells in pancreas resulting in lack of insulin production.It is more likely to people with family history of this disease.

    Symptoms and Diagnosis

    Some of the symptoms of this disease are loss of vision, severe appetite, severe thirst, and even one can notice severe weight loss in short time. Urination could also be frequent.Diagnosis for type l diabetes is taking tests which shows the blood sugar levels.
    What are the effects of type l diabetes
    If diabetes is not managed properly, it might cause some serious problems on heart, it can cause vision problems leading to vision loss, increases blood pressure, excessive cholesterol levels. It can lead to nerve issues specifically in feet and kidney problems.


    Patients diagnosed with type l diabetes must take insulin to keep the blood sugar levels maintained in the body. The person might take insulin either in the form of injections or pumps. Insulin levels blood sugar levels. Insulin intake varies day by day. The patients must regularly test blood sugar and take the insulin accordingly. Patients with this disease must have regular diet and exercise

    According to W.H.O, 1.5 million people in the world died due to diabetes. Moreover half of the people suffering with diabetes die due to problems on heart. It also triggers kidney failure. It states that 90 percent of  people containing diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
    According to American Diabetes  Association, diabetes is the seventh largest disease leading to death in U.S.A


    Some of the complications of type 2 diabetes involve vision loss, retinal problems like cataracts, infections relating to skin, hearing problems, high blood pressure, heart rating issues like heart stroke, heart attack, nerve issues leading to numbness, no sensation. It can also reduces blood circulation to the feet. Hence when the feet has a cut it takes time to heal. It can cause infections leading to leg damage or removal of leg or foot.
    Many problems related to liver such as diarrhea , vomiting can also occur. It can infect kidney too and leads to kidney failure. It might result in hyperglycemia, a condition where the person might experience excessive thirst and frequent urination. This condition generally occurs where blood sugar levels are high. The condition where blood sugar levels are low is hypoglycemia. This condition makes person difficult to talk and one can see shakiness. Exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining blood sugar levels.


    Insulin is the active hormone produced by pancreas that helps in carrying sugar from blood to all the cells in the body. Type 2 diabetes patients cannot use the insulin for correct level, thus pancreas in these patients works hard and try to produce more insulin. As a result, in long run, pancreas could no longer produce insulin and hence glucose forms in blood. The reason behind this condition is yet to be known. It might be due to genetic reasons this condition might occur


    Type 2 diabetes starts slowly and increases gradually. Some of the symptoms in the early stage might involve blurry vision, fatigue, skin infections such as itchiness, loss of weight, thirst could be heavy and one might even experience frequent urination. Symptoms even persist of heavy appetite and dry mouth. High blood sugar levels in the long run can cause infections, healing of cuts is tough and pain in the feet and can have no sensation on the skin. Under a supervision of a doctor one can take care of it successfully. One must consult the doctor if the person has the above symptoms.
    Coming to heart diseases, women with diabetes are more likely to have heart strokes when comparing with women who don't have this disease. Diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy can effect the child's organs which are under developing stage. It can have effect on labor and might cause excessive baby weight. The baby might develop this condition in their lifetime.


    For diagnosing the type 2, doctor might recommend hemoglobin A1C test, fasting plasma test and oral glucose tolerance test. The first test need not need fasting. According to the average of blood glucose levels in 3 months, the test reveals the results. Second test measures glucose levels present in plasma and requires fasting. During third test, glucose is given 2 or 3 hours before they take blood sample. According to the test results. Doctors can recommend good exercise, maintain diet and how to make use of medicines efficiently. 


    Managing of type 2 diabetes is efficient if one can follow some important tips regularly. Have regular checkups of your blood sugar levels and watch them carefully. Take adequate insulin according to the measurements. Rich diet including foods with fiber, and healthy carbohydrates can help you keep up levels. Some foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains etc. helps to level blood glucose. Taking food in regular intervals or in short period. Keep bad fat and bad carbohydrates away. Refined foods, sweets adds bad carbohydrates to your leaving your blood glucose high. Make sure to have your body weight in control. If you can keep up the specific range of this condition, you can manage it perfect. Maintain regular exercise along with proper diet. It effects on blood glucose levels and succeeds in maintaining them. Not everyone who is diagnosed with type 2 must take insulin. Your doctor recommends you insulin if it is necessary

    Gestational diabetes is the condition that occurs for women when they are pregnant. Due to some hormonal changes in the body, the disease occurs. The women gets diabetes during pregnancy, even if they don't have it before or after delivery. This condition is gestational diabetes.


    It can effect the baby organs and might cause severe risk in lifetime. Baby can have severe weight gain and the labor could also be more complicated. Careful management is a must for this diabetes. It can also complicate breathing and lowers blood sugar levels. 

    Symptoms and diagnosis

     It causes mild symptoms only which might include loss of vision, fatigue, frequent urination and heavy thirst. Diagnosis requires a glucose challenge test during 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Primarily doctor asks you to drink glucose and checks the blood results after one hour. High sugar levels in the blood needs oral glucose tolerance test which involves 2 steps to show the results. The doctor then suggests you according to the results. 


    A well maintained diet with rich fiber and good carbohydrates is the vital thing to support blood sugar levels. Measure the blood sugar levels before and after eating food according to your doctor prescription. Exercise acts as prominent thing along with food. It gives well maintained blood sugar levels.consistently. Eat foods that are rich in carbohydrate, fats and protein. Eat food in short gaps. Good carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole grains, beans, fruits which are low in sugar, vegetables are essential for women in this condition. Take carbohydrates between 120 to 190 mg.  Divide this intake in 5 small portions. You need to take at least 60 gm of protein. Some protein rich foods consist of chicken, fish and dairy products like tofu. Healthy fats involve nuts and seeds. If your doctor prescribes the need to take insulin, ask him the timings to take it. Your doctor will take care of your blood glucose levels and suggest you what to do and at what time.

Prevention of gestational diabetes is impossible.. However, the pregnant women can take care without getting the condition worse. With regular exercise and scheduled rich diet, lowers blood glucose levels. Controlling weight also plays the key role in maintaining this condition. Diabetes without treatment might lead to serious problems. However with proper care and medication, doctor can reduce its severity effectively
